adding His way

"Add to your faith—do not add to yourself.

This is where we make the mistake.  We must not only enter by faith, but we must advance by faith each step of the way.  At every new stage we shall find ourselves as incompetent and unequal for the pressure as before, and we must take the grace and the victory simply by faith. Is it courage?  We shall find ourselves lacking in the needed courage;  we must claim it by faith.  Is it love? Our own love will be inadequate; but we must take His love, and we shall find it given.  Is it faith itself?  We must have the faith of God, and Christ in us will be the spirit of faith, as well as the blessing that faith claims. So our whole life, from beginning to end, is but Christ in us—in the exceeding riches of His grace.  And our everlasting song will be;  Not I; but Christ who liveth in me." ~ A.B. Simpson

It's not about us.  It's never about us.

It's about HIM.  Jesus.  His grace.

We can attempt to do life on our own seeking our own way like the rest of the world which centers on self OR we can seek a better way through Christ who sends grace after grace into our life allowing us to sing His everlasting song.

It's your choice.

Choose for eternity!

a fishy grammar naught?

My youngest and I were reading a Bible storybook last night and she stopped me after I read this sentence:

"There's a boy here who has five loaves and two fishes," replied Andrew, "but they won't go very far in this crowd!"

Notice anything?

She did.  Her immediate statement was - "That's bad grammar!"  The example she used came from a sentence that is used around home after a fishing outing:

"I caught five FISH today on Banana Creek."

And she was right.  We never use the word *fishes* as the plural for *fish*.  When we use the plural of the noun *fish*, we say *fish*  We'd only use the word *fishes* as a verb.

Honestly, I don't know.  Is the word *fish* like the word *deer* or *sheep* when it comes to singular and plural? Or is this a midwestern thing?  Or an odd grammar thing?

Fish or fishes?  What say ye?

to start the day

"The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!"

If you can hum that sentence, then you grew up during a time when there were lots of coffee commercials on television.  I hardly ever watch television anymore, but I can't say that I've seen a Tasters Choice or Hills Brothers or Folgers commercial in years.

That doesn't change the fact that the best part of waking up in the morning is smelling fresh coffee brewing.  I'm so thankful for my son and daughter-in-law who introduced us to whole coffee beans and the art of grinding those beans because that has definitely enhanced the whole coffee drinking experience.  Although all the sleepyheads cringe in the morning with the noise of Dad grinding coffee, it is one of my favorite wake-up calls as his pots of coffee are the best.

Stirring in a bit of milk and sugar in one of my favorite cups, the next task is to head to my desk to spend some time in God's Word.

Can't think of a better combination to get each day started with a smile!

a movie for YOU

A powerful movie hits theaters around the country today and I highly recommend going to see it this weekend......

The movie tells the journey a young woman takes as she seeks for answers about her life after she deals with unusual health problems.  As the story unfolds, many unexpected twists and turns reveal a deeper truth as the viewer cannot help but recognize how a simple decision by one person affected so many other people in its path. Inspiring as the writers, directors, and producers so vividly portray that each life is beautiful as healing, forgiveness, and hope are discovered along Hannah's journey.

Here's the trailer:
Or check out other information and film clips at the October Baby Movie site.

As an added note, my review comes from personally seeing a private screening of the October Baby movie last fall and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

the long spring

How'd I miss it on the calendar?  The first day of spring during a year that it actually feels like the first day of spring?!  Typically we scoff and laugh at the calendar when it tells us such things because spring looks soooooo far away in March.  But this year?  Spring is bursting all over the place.  The snow is gone.  The ice is off the lakes. Grass is beginning to green.  Trees are beginning to leaf out. Frost is quickly coming out of the roads.  The sun has been shining.  The temperatures are staying twenty to thirty degrees above average.  And people who went away to warm southern places over spring break are finding that our weather was just as nice at home!

It's interesting to see how many people are walking around town with a startled smile on their faces.  There's the anticipation that the weather will go back to the normal, yet day after day it shows no signs of that as spring continues to march forth.

I'm choosing to rejoice!  Spring is my very favorite time of the year and if God is blessing us with an extra LONG season of spring this year I'm going to enjoy every moment of it with a smile on my face :-)

May your spring be one of rejoicing, too!

your only hope

"Your only hope for joy, your only hope for peace, your only hope for comfort, your only hope for strength and your only hope for love in this life — is found in the cross of Jesus Christ." ~ David Platt

Simply stated.  Simple truth.  Simple hope.

Jesus Christ.

time to overleap?

"Many difficulties and perplexities in connection with our Christian life might best be settled by a simple and bold decision of our will to go forward with the light we have, and leave the speculations and theories that we cannot decide for further settlement.  What we need is to act, and to act with the best light we have.  As we step out into the present duty and full obedience, many things wil be made plain which it is no use waiting to decide.

Beloved, cut the Gordian know, like Alexander, with the sword of decision.  Launch out into the deep with a bold plunge, and Christ will settle for you all the questions that you are now debating, and more probably show you their insignificance, letting you see that the only way to settle them is to overleap them.  They are Satan's petty snares to waste your time and keep you halting when you should be marching on." ~ A.B. Simpson

It is often difficult to walk into unknown territory.  However, if where you are walking is consistent with Scripture, know that God will go with you.  Overleap all the doubts and see what adventure God is taking you on!

the early spring

You'd think that I would be dancing, but it feels so surreal I almost can't consider it.

Early spring.  VERY early spring.  VERY VERY early spring.

I mean really, our spring usually arrives at least a month after it does on the calendar.

But this year?  We had a snowstorm that brought us almost two feet of snow as we marched into March.  Then the weather began changing about a week after that as it gradually warmed up to a long stretch of record breaking highs.  We have been seeing the high temperature of the days over THIRTY degrees warmer than the average.   The snow is almost completely gone with only a few remnants scattered in the shady woods or where the very high snowbanks were after the snowstorm.

There's a sense that this is just a false hope, but with the temperatures forecast to stay abnormally warm (in the 60's) as we get some rain over the next few days, it seems that spring is sticking.  People are talking GARDENS as they rake their yards in March instead of May.

It's just plain weird, I tell you!

But until it changes, the plan is to continue keeping our windows open to let the spring air refresh our home as we enjoy the return of birds singing in the morning. And to praise God for his blessing of an early spring :-)

Enjoy your day!

let's talk GREAT

"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable." ~ Psalm 145:3

That's a LOT of GREAT in one sentence!

Let's throw in a few synonyms for GREAT: awesome, ample, colossal, enormous, brilliant, immense, amazing, fantastic, gigantic, tremendous, incredible, surpassing, absolute, transcendent, wonderful, outstanding, fantastic, exceptional, superb, exquisite, bountiful, immeasurable, and the list goes on and on and on.  We could use every possible synonym for our GREAT God and never come close to totally describing Him as His greatness surpasses our vocabulary!

How thankful my heart is to be on this adventure of life daily learning more about my GREAT God!

Have a great day!

making time

"How often the complaint is heard that there is no time for prayer!  Very often the confession is made that, even if time could be found, one feels unable to spend the time in real fellowship with God.  No one needs to ask what it is that hinders growth in the spiritual life.  The secret of strength can only be found in living communion with God." ~ Andrew Murray

Words that were written by a man over a hundred years ago are still so very true today.  Even with all the modern conveniences available today to make our work lighter and easier, every moment of our day is consumed with something.

There's no time.  Simply no time for prayer.

Can I challenge you to make time?

Let me know what happens when you do....

cut medical costs

My thought for the day:

"If a person will love God the way he ought to love God, he will then love others the way he ought to love others; and when he loves God and others the way they ought to be loved, he will never need a psychiatrist." ~ Paul Tournier

It's a good way of reducing medical costs in our country, don't you think?

delaying prayer

"When we pray, our desire must grow deeper and stronger, and we must ask with our whole hearts.  God puts us into the school of persevering prayer so that our weak faith may be strengthened.  Believe that there is a great blessing in the delayed answer to prayer." ~ Andrew Murray

Ever have a prayer that God seems to be ignoring? Persevere seeking His will in the matter, growing your faith at the same time, and trusting the great blessing that is coming with the delayed answer!

Simple Woman's Daybook for March 12

For today March 12

Outside my window.....there is light rain and a very gray day awaiting me.

I am thinking.....about how quickly this snow will melt with this rain and the forecasted warm temperatures coming this week.

I am thankful.....for the Lord's protection over all of our family's various travels recently.

I am denim skirt and a pink hooded sweatshirt since it's a little cool in the house this morning.

I am husband's truck running out in the driveway as he gets ready to head off to work.

I am to get all my winter cleaning projects done before spring arrives as it appears to be in a hurry to arrive!

I am creating.....a granny square kind of quilt.

I am take my long winter coat in for dry cleaning as I hopeful that I'm done wearing it for this season.

I am reading.....The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

I am praying.....for our political leaders to have wisdom, unity, and a willingness to put their political parties aside and seek real answers for our country.

I am remembering.....that today would have been my grandmother's birthday.   As I consider how many family members are Christians on this side of the family, I believe she must have been quite a prayer warrior.

I am kick sugar for awhile.  Wish me success!

On my my youngest who has been a frequent waker-upper over the last several nights which means I'm a frequent waker-upper, too, since she comes to my side of the bed!

From the learning rooms.....we're enjoying the number of pages in books greatly decreasing.

Noticing that.....the *springing ahead* doesn't get easier the older I get.

I am looking forward to.....signs of spring and the arrival of the first robin.

Pondering these words....."There is no need to plead that the love of God shall fill our hearts as though He were unwilling to fill us:  He is willing as light is willing to flood a room that is opened to its brightness; willing as water is willing to flow into an emptied channel.  Love is pressing round us on all sides like air.  Cease to resist, and instantly love takes possession. " ~ Amy Carmichael

From the kitchen.....will lots of vegetable chopping.

Around the house....are remnants of a changing season where we need both warm and cool kinds of clothes which means there's winter jackets, spring fleece, soaking mittens, muddy boots, running shoes, etc.

One of my favorite the return of happy birds singing outside my window as long as they don't start chirping too early in the morning!  LOL!

A few plans for the rest of the week.....include a lighter week since the area has spring break so we most of our regular activities are canceled this week.  However, we still have schooling plus I have a string of four meetings which I need to be prepared for which begin late this week.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you....
A picture of the beach we visited as I went out walking one morning.  I can smell the salt air just looking at that picture!

Thank you for stopping and visiting my daybook on this day. If you'd like to visit others who are participating in the March daybook or write a journal yourself, please stop over at Peggy's at Simple Woman's Daybook

seek glorious

"What is the most glorious thing that a man can and needs to do every day?  Nothing less than to seek, to know, to love, and to praise this glorious God.  As glorious as God is, so is the glory that begins to work in the heart and life of the man who gives himself to live for God." ~ Andrew Murray

How's that for my thought of the day? Have a glorious kind of day!

see the Sonshine above

Just a little reminder from a recent airplane flight....
.....that life may be cloudy and stormy and challenging right now for you, but if you lift your eyes above those clouds you'll find blue skies and the Sonshine waiting for you.  He has not moved.  HE IS MERCIFUL!

"I lift up my eyes to you; to you whose throne is in heaven.  As the eyes of a slave look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy." ~ Psalm 123:1-2

where are you squeezing?

"We must give God time to make Himself known to us. Believe with all your heart that, just as you present yourself to God in prayer, so God presents Himself to you as the Hearer of the prayer.  But you cannot realize this unless you give Him time and quiet." ~ Andrew Murray

But you cannot realize this unless you give Him time and quiet.

Our lives are way too busy.  WAY.TOO.BUSY.

We try to squeeze this and that and the other thing into our days.

Where do you put time with God?  Does it get squeezed out when other things get squeezed in?  Or is it such a priority to you that you make sure that you spend time and quiet with Him and don't worry if other things don't get squeezed in later in the day?

Truly, you will never regret time and quiet spent in prayer as it will provide the strength, energy, and direction for the rest of your day!

be genuine

Here's a quote for you that came from my airplane reading yesterday:

"Stop and think about this:  Would you say that the people who had the greatest and most lasting impact on you were people you felt genuinely loved you and cared for you?" ~ James Merritt

Yes, stop and think about that for a moment.  Who are the people who have most positively had a lasting effect on your life?  I'm guessing it may often be people who have developed a relationship with you and who have a relationship with Jesus Christ. For it is He who loved the world, sacrificed His life for each person and their sins, and who is alive as He sits at the right hand of the Heavenly Father interceding for us.  HE has perfect love which He gives to us and as we have a deepening relationship with our Savior, we can give that very love to others as we genuinely love and care for them through His power and strength.

"Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins." ~ I Peter 4:8

Yup, just my thought of the day which through His strength I may pass on  to whoever crosses my path.

sand vs woods

Made it to warmer places despite all the snow that fell at home and am enjoying a long weekend with a very small part of my family.

The first thing we did once we arrived to our beach location Thursday evening was walk on the beach.
I love walking on the sand of a beach.  I love the scent of the ocean.  I love the seagull friends. I love the sound of the surf.  I love the reminder that God is so big.
It always makes me wonder why God placed me where He did when I feel my heartbeat while walking along a sandy shore. Guess He thought He could speak louder to me while living in the four seasons of a woods where I walk through trails cut through a heavy woods, smell the scent of green, talk to chickadees instead of seagulls, and hear the sound of the wind through rustling leaves.  I love the reminder that God is so big.

Enjoy your weekend wherever you are doing whatever God placed before you. I know I will!

march with love at all times

"A friend loveth at all times...." ~ Proverbs 17:17

As we enter a new month, it's a perfect time to contemplate friends and what they mean to us.  It's also a perfect time to contemplate what kind of friend we are to others.

There's so much that can be said on the topic of friends and friendship, much more than can be said within a simple blog post.

Perhaps it would be a good challenge this month to really live out the "loveth at ALL TIMES" part because there are moments when friendship isn't convenient or easy.  There are times when it's downright difficult.  And yet we have a perfect example found in Jesus Christ.  He truly does love at all times.  In fact, His love was sooooo great that He was willing to live out His own words:  "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends." ~ John 15:13  How's that for a friend challenge?!

Be a blessing to your friends and march through the month with love!
