Tuesday, September 30

As swiftly as the leaves colored this fall, they seem to be just as swiftly falling.  I'm afraid that if we get a blustery kind of day or a downpour of rain that the woods will just as swiftly become barren looking.

And the daylight?  Have you noticed that the sun is hanging lower in the sky these days as our daylight hours noticeably shorten with darker mornings and darker evenings?

What about the weather?  There's actually some rain/SNOW mix forecast for the upcoming weekend!

Then I look at the calendar and shake my head.  Silly girl! It's the last day of September!  What do you expect this time of the year? (Better yet...how did this month fly by so extremely fast?!)

I'm sooooooooo not ready to say goodbye to warm days and sunshine.

the not naturally gifted part

"Our Lord's making of a disciple is supernatural.  He does not build on any natural capacity at all.  God does not ask us to do the things that are easy to us naturally;  He only asks us to do the things we are perfectly fitted to do by His grace, and the cross will come along that line always." ~ Oswald Chambers

It's fascinating to me how God takes us down paths where we think we can use the wonderful talents He has naturally gifted us with when He handcrafted us.  And before you know it you're having a "wait a minute!" moment with God as you see He's leading you into something you are NOT quite naturally gifted to do.  No way can you do it!  But you do know that He did lead you down that path even if it ended up not being for the purposes you thought. It takes you right to the end of yourself.   Your eyes travel to the cross as you die to self and fall into His grace to take your next steps.

One by one.

And you are humbled by the results which really had nothing to do with you, but were all about Him.  Because God is awesome like that.....

a common answer to why

It has been a gloriously beautiful autumn day here and I confess to only hanging out in the sunshine over a long lunch hour instead of ALL DAY LONG like I wanted to.  It took every bit of self control to hang out indoors correcting school work because I was behind on the task.  A must do situation.  So instead of sporting an awesome tan at the end of the day, I am instead sporting a very tired brain as I always feel like I re-learn everything my kids are learning.  Anyways, enough procrastination.  Here goes.....

Join the community for a great writing challenge!  Write for five minutes on one word. No editing. Post it.  Link it up over at Kate's - Five Minute Friday - and read the link before yours leaving an encouraging comment behind.  The word for this Friday is BECAUSE.  Ready!  Set! GO!

(my climbing everywhere grandson)

I haven't had time to be online much today because I've been busy correcting schooling all day, but I'm wondering how many writers responded to the word of the day with BECAUSE....I SAID SO.  If they are mothers, they probably have written about that phrase since mothers do use that quite a bit (unless the millennial generation of mothers don't use it, but I don't know how you can't use it since there are so many situations where you really don't have time to explain all the reasons "why" and you just go with the "because I said so" response which is never satisfactory to your children no matter what age they are!)

But, in thinking about this, I wondered about another parent who could probably so easily use this term with us.  Our Heavenly Father.  How often do our behaviors, thoughts, plans, wanderings, and all those kinds of things pull us away from Him and we ignore that little voice that says we shouldn't go there because He said so.  I mean, He really did say so all over the place in His Word.  But how often are we not satisfied with that response and defy Him?

We have to remember that He says so because He loves us so.  All His reasons outweigh any reason we could ever come up with for living disobediently.

Now if we could just get our kids to understand that, too!

the colors of the day

Lately my mind has been thinking "stop ahead for fall" and then I realized....

....that the calendar actually made it official yesterday.

The leaves are turning colors quickly and are pretty dramatically colored in places.

It's so beautiful even on such cloudy overcast days.

I can hardly imagine what they'll look like when the sun comes out....

....probably will need to wear sunglasses with the bright yellows.

Going to soak in all of God's glorious creation while I can before a good windy day blows all those leaves down to the ground.

beet you to it

It's always been this way.  Thirty years ago or today. Mondays are just plain ol' hard days for me to get going and get anything productive done.  The day starts slow, picks up speed never, and ends with me shaking my head discouragingly as I think back to what has been accomplished from sun-up to sundown.

There's never been a clear reason why.  Perhaps I need to look closer at God's Word and one of the ten commandments (Deuteronomy 5:12-15) - "Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy , as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord you God.  On it you shall not do any work....."(and you can keep reading a few more sentences for further explanation) - because maybe I'm not resting, refreshing, recharging, and refining my time with my Heavenly Father like I'm commanded to do. Therefore, I'm starting my week tired.  Behind.  Distracted.  I dunno?

But today after a frustrating morning, I determined that an afternoon catnap in the sunshine - which seems rare these days - may be helpful.  And it was.  I mentally regrouped and decided to put all my "thinking" projects of the day on hold and instead wandered into my garden to pull all my beets. Stuck them in my huge canning pot to simmer for the rest of the afternoon.  Finished processing them for pickling and here's the result:
At least I feel like I redeemed the day and tackled something that was on my to-do list for the fall days.

After seeing the benefits of a catnap today, I think that on the next Sunday I'll try harder at the resting, refreshing, recharging, and refining part and see if I can maybe change my Mondays for the better!

go ahead and laugh

(one of my leaning giant sunflowers)

"We are not here to be overcome, but to rise unvanquished after every knockout blow, and laugh the laugh of faith, not fear." ~ Amy Carmichael

My thought for the weekend from one of my favorite people who is known for living a bold faith that was regularly challenged with knockout blows. Obviously she learned that God's perfect love casts out fear (I John 4:18) and she could laugh the laugh of faith.

How about joining me in a bit of laughter as we live a life of faith?!

Friday, September 19

It is Friday - a day worthy of writing for five minutes on one word.  No editing.  Post it.  Link it up at Kate's FIVE MINUTE FRIDAY  Go to the link before yours, read it, bless the writer with a word of encouragement.  The word for today is HOLD. Ready...set...GO!

(a mere 18 years ago....)

A sense of deja vu passed over me.  I had been here before. Six times before as a matter of fact.

Another child of mine had reached that magical age that society claims them as an adult.  18 precious years.

And I once again sighed as I considered that reality.

In that moment of "hold" you realize that your essential teaching of that child is done.....and with that thought is all the many many many many things that you never talked to them about.....and that is followed by all the reminders of mothering blunders.mistakes.muddles.missteps that happened with this child.

The result?  An imperfect mother raised an imperfect child.

As you realize you can't hold onto this moment or tell them all that you forgot to tell them or do over all those things you wish you hadn't done, grace steps in.

You walk over to your desk and re-open an envelope that was silently left on your bed on the day you took her to college.

You allow the words on the page written from her heart wash over you as tears wash over your cheeks falling down into your heart.

You release the hold.that.moment as your realize how God's grace and love covers all your imperfections as well as the imperfections of your children.

the wise yes

"When you say yes to something there is less of you for something else.  Make sure your yes is worth the less." ~ Lou Giglio

Ohhhhh, there are so many things to say YES to when asked, and, of course, they are all good things, aren't they? But there's only so many hours in a day and the thinner you are spread, the more chances there are that the quality of what you do will be compromised.  Plus, it seems your attitude can easily get negatively compromised  as well. C'mon, no one can do everything perfectly!

Choose wisely, my friend!  Say YES to those things that will easily allow God's love to flow out of you and you'll find you won't be compromised, but instead you'll be energized!  It makes serving others a blessing to them and to you!

ready or not

Definitely one of the fastest weeks e.v.e.r!  Here it is - FRIDAY - and the fun challenge of writing for five minutes on one word with no editing, posting it, linking it up at Five Minute Friday on Kate's blog Heading Home, and then leaving a word of encouragement behind on the post before yours. The word for this week is READY....so here we go....ready, set, GO!

(our old garage sale signs)

Summer weekends were full of plans which meant planning a garage sale on a September weekend instead.  No problem, right?  All summer to get ready, right?  Weather should still be good, right?

Sooooo, this past Monday I cleaned out our garage and set up tables.  I was gone all day Tuesday and Wednesday catching up at work after being gone for a week.  Thursday was spent setting up and pricing all the things I wanted to sell.  Sale began today (Friday).

Ready?  Hardly.  Weather good?  Hardly.  Good day of selling stuff?  Yup!

It was one of those situations that was hanging out there, I knew it was coming, I really saw the need to do it, but did not feel prepared at all to do it.  Yet, it didn't seem stressful.  It was more of a "what will be, will be" kind of feeling and I just went with the flow.  And it was fine.

Much of my life feels that way right now.  Life situations that have been hanging out there, I know the general direction that things are going, I know certain steps will need to be taken, and I don't feel completely prepared to do them.  Yet when the time comes, I will follow the Lord trusting His plans for what will be.

Because He truly does walk before us, next to us, behind us. And it will be fine whether I'm ready or not.

forget the acorns

"The man who truly would know God must give time to Him." ~ A.W. Tozer

Often feeling like a squirrel who is busy hiding away as many acorns as he can find this time of the year, it is oh so important to take time for God in the busyness of autumn. Don't just take time for Him, MAKE time for Him.  Get to know Him.  For He will sustain you through the winter up ahead.  His sustaining is so much better than anything all those acorns you're collecting will ever do for you!

Daybooking in September

For September 8th

Outside my window.....the skies are sunny and it's breezy today.

I am thinking.....about the ability we have to change the world one person at a time.  Seems like a slow process until you consider the possible multiplication from that one person.

I am thankful.....for God's protection over me through all of my travels during the past week.

I am wearing....my blue jeans, a favorite white t-shirt, and my new flip flops.

I am hearing.....the breeze in the trees.

I am wondering.....how college campuses can talk a lot about drug and alcohol prevention, yet turn a blind eye to what is actually happening on their campuses.  Seriously, these students are our future leaders?

I am creating.....a long follow-up list from the conference I attended last week.

I am going.....to clean my garage today so I can start setting up for a garage sale.

I am reading....."Grace" by Max Lucado

I am praying.....for clear focus and vision for the future.

I am remembering.....how much I love fall days!  Warm sunshine during the day and crisp nights for sleeping.

I am hoping.....to manage my time well this week because there's so much I want to accomplish.

On my mind.....is the importance of loving sincerely and intentionally blessing others.  We can do that best when we fully lean into the truth of our identity in Christ.

From the learning rooms.....we have begun a new school year.  Only two students this year.

I am learning....that God really does help us when we are asked to stretch in new uncomfortable ways.  He IS faithful!

Noticing that.....the trees are definitely starting to change color.

I am looking forward to.....applying some new things I've learned!

Pondering these words....."Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands." ~ Anne Frank

From the kitchen.....we will be eating lots of veggies from the garden.  The harvest is always way more than we can humanly possibly eat!

Around the house....are the signs of someone who didn't feel like unpacking last night.

One of my favorite things.....is spending time with my grandchildren and enjoying their abundance of energy (and the mischief that comes with natural toddler curiosity).

A few plans for the rest of the week.....include heading back to work, setting up a garage sale for the weekend, garden harvesting, soccer practice for a daughter, and in general catching up from a week of being gone.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you....
A bee on a cosmos - the bees are so so busy amongst the garden flowers right now.

the result of sun

The best part about the end of the summer is the SUNFLOWERS!

Planting a variety of sunflowers adds to the joy.

The bees are buzzing all around them.

They are as busy as I feel right now!

Fall is right around the corner.  You can feel it with the cool nights and the warm days.  Truly, another favorite season of mine!  Enjoy it while it lasts!
